Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar – A Life of Service and Dedication
Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar is a respected Sri Lankan figure known for his outstanding service in business, diplomacy, sports, and community work. Throughout his life, he has shown strong leadership, humility, and a deep concern for the wellbeing of others. Even after retirement, he continues to support the people of Sri Lanka, especially those in the Haputale region.
Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar received his early education at Royal Primary School and later at Royal College, Colombo. He was a senior prefect and a talented sportsman, best known for his outstanding performance in the Royal–Thomian cricket match of 1966. He continued his education at the University of Ceylon, Colombo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Double Mathematics and Chemistry. He graduated in 1970 and was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Sportsman.
His career began in 1971 at Whittalls Estates. In 1974, Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar joined George Steuart & Co., one of the oldest companies in Sri Lanka. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and became the Group Chairman in 2000. Under his leadership, the company expanded into several sectors such as plantations, finance, and healthcare. He was admired for his honest leadership and his ability to guide the company with a strong sense of responsibility.
In 2015, Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar was appointed as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Australia, with additional responsibilities for New Zealand, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. In this diplomatic role, he worked hard to strengthen Sri Lanka’s international relationships and support Sri Lankan communities living abroad.
After retiring from official positions, Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar continued to serve the people in meaningful ways. He is the Founder of the Somasakthy Trust and the Chairman of Orupaani Sri Lanka. He is a close associate of Mr. Manik Jayakumar and Mr. R. Gnanasekaran, and he works closely with them through the Two Leaves Trust, which supports underprivileged people in the Haputale region.
Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar now spends every other week in the Haputale region, staying connected to the people and directly supporting various activities. His regular presence and personal involvement have brought many benefits to the local communities. His contributions are quiet and humble, but their impact is real and lasting.
Through his life and work, Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar has shown that leadership is not only about titles or positions, but about serving others with honesty, compassion, and commitment. Whether in business, diplomacy, or community work, he continues to inspire others with his values and dedication to humanity.
